Coleman was born in the town of Blackpool in Lancashire. She attended Arnold School Blackpool as head girl, and she received every A grade on her A level exams. Moffat said that he chose Coleman for the role of companion due to her ability to work best with Smith. In addition, Moffat noted that she talked faster than Smith.
