Steven Moffat announced at a Doctor Who press conference on 21 March that Coleman has replaced Karen Gillan as the companion of the Doctor since Arthur Darvill left the series and was to play the role alongside Matt Smith. Moffat stated that he picked Coleman for the role of companion because she would work best with Smith. Also, Moffat noted that she spoke faster than Smith.
